An Oldie but a Goodie: CFLs

I know the buzz about CFLs (Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs) is long over, but it is one of the easiest things we can do to increase our efforts for the environment. According to Energy Star the website http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls...

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

This effort is so simple and so effective and here is what's really exciting. At this year's Earth Day celebration: Captain Planet Carnival on Tuesday, April 22 at Tate Center from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. you can come a get a CFL for free. Georgia Power and Atlanta Halco Lighting will be on site handing out CFLs. All you have to do is sign a pledge stating you will change an old inefficient light bulb for a CFL.

This is only a small portion of the energy-efficient prizes that will be available on Earth Day. So mark your calendars and get excited to come by Tate, next Tuesday and celebrate good ole' Mother Earth!! More exciting details about the celebration to come...

Here is a summarized version of the Sustainability Resolution:

Purpose: A resolution supporting the Student-Initiated Proposal for Sustainable Practices at the University of Georgia.

WHEREAS issues regarding sustainability are of increasing importance nation- and worldwide;

WHEREAS the University of Georgia has a social responsibility to adopt more sustainable practices as a progressive institution;

WHEREAS many of UGA’s peer and aspirational institutions have already begun to successfully adopt the measures outlined in the Proposal for Sustainable Practices;

Go Vote Green at SLC room 214!

There is an awesome opportunity to vote in support of Go Green Alliance's Sustainability Resolution with Student Government Association tonight!

The SGA Senate will be voting on this resolution in SLC room 214 at 7 p.m. It would be incredibly beneficial if as many of you as possible would come to speak on behalf of the Resolution. Clearly, Chris Morphis (your Ecology senator) and President Connor McCarthy are absolutely in support of the Resolution, but Connor does not have a vote in Senate and Chris is only 1 of 35 voting members.

Delta to celebrate Earth Day with carbon neutrality

If you won't be celebrating Earth Day with us at UGA because you're traveling via air, take advantage of this opportunity to go green with Delta.

According to an e-mail sent to its SkyMiles members, Delta will partner with The Conservation Fund to "match all carbon offset donations made via delta.com during the month of April."

When you contribute to its Go Zero program, The Conservation Fund plants trees to offset carbon emissions resulting from your flight. So if you participate in Delta's matching program, they'll plant double the trees!

According to The Conservation Fund information on the Delta site:

A contribution of $5.50, which results in the planting of one tree "in a protected park or national wildlife refuge," will offset carbon emissions from your roundtrip flight of approximately 1,320 miles.

So if you fly Delta this month, practice carbon neutrality and plant two trees for only $5.50.

Tate Street Painting

This Sunday, April 13 at midnight we are gathering at Tate Plaza to do some street painting in the name of the Captain Planet Carnival that will occur on April 22nd. Recycled Plastic Used in T-shirts

Today in the Business section of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, there is an article about a new line of T-shirts produced by Coca-Cola called "Drink 2 Wear" that are partially made of recycled plastic bottles. Beginning April 14, 400 Wal-Mart stores plan to sell the Coca-Cola T-shirts and they will also be available online at www.walmart.com. The T-shirts cost $7.50 and come in various sizes, styles and will include one of the phrases such as "Rehash Your Trash" and "Make Your Plastic Fantastic." The T-shirts are composed of a blend of half recycled polyethylene terephthalate and half cotton. Depending on the size of the shirt, about three to five plastic bottles are used to make one shirt. This isn't Coca-Cola's first time selling shirts made of recyclable plastic. Last year, the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta began selling similar T-shirts. The Wal-Mart deal is the first mass-marketed T-shirt for Coca-Cola. During the month of April, Wal-Mart is promoting the shirts alongside its Earth Month program. Next time you're at Wal-Mart, make sure you check out the new shirts!

I am interning in Atlanta right now at a new PR firm called The R Agency. Michael Roberts, the owner of the agency owns a conglomerate of companies, many of which are hotels, homes, and loft apartments. Roberts is very green-minded on his projects. It has been interesting to learn about his philosophy on green living and to watch his visions become reality as many of his projects are built to be environmentally friendly. Here are some ways the Roberts Companies implement green building in projects:

Bamboo flooring and wool carpeting: Materials are rapidly renewable. When glued together, the bamboo produces durable floor planks. The wool is biodegradeable and sheds water naturally.

Fluorescent light fixtures: These light bulbs use 70 percent of electricity required for incandescent light bulbs and last up to eight times longer.

Energy-efficient appliances: Residents at the Mayfair condos have an option to choose "Energy Star" appliances designed to cut down on electricity use.

Recyclemania Ends Friday

Turn in all of your recyclables this week! Recyclemania, a 10-week recycling contest for colleges and universities across the country, ends Friday.

This year is the first time The University of Georgia has entered the national Recyclemania competition and is currently ranked fourth for the “Gorilla Prize.” The Gorilla Prize honors the school that recycles the highest gross tonnage of materials during the ten-week competition, regardless of campus population. UGA is also ranked fifth for Target Material-Paper.

The Go Green Alliance held "Clean Out Your Files Day" on Friday, March 29. This event was extremely successful and it encouraged recycling since Recyclemania ends April 5.

With only two days left, you can make a difference. Bring all of your recycable products to your nearest recycling bin on the UGA campus. Help UGA win this nation-wide recycling competition!

Neither paper nor plastic: cute t-shirt grocery bag

To avoid using disposable bags that are thrown away after one or two uses, many eco-conscious consumers have started bringing their own reusable bags grocery shopping. Several stores, such as Kroger, Publix and Earth Fare sell sturdy reusable bags for a nominal price.

However, you don't need cash to bring your own bag. With an old t-shirt, some scissors, a needle and some thread, you can make your own reusable grocery bag. Not only is this bag sustainable because it's used over and over, but it saves a t-shirt from going in the trash!

This week at Tate Plaza, an Environmental Health Sciences class distributed t-shirt grocery bags that they had made. They gave me a pink one that says, "It's not easy being a princess." With each bag they included instructions on how to make your own, which I'm including below.

1) Turn t-shirt inside out.

2) Sew bottom together 12" below bottom of sleeves.

3) Sew a second seam close to the first one to reinforce the bottom of the bag.

4) Cut excess t-shirt off.

5) Turn t-shirt right side out.

6) Cut sleeves off just outside of seam (to prevent fraying)

7) Cut neck out in a square shape large enough to fit items in but be sure to leave enough fabric for handles.

8) Use and enjoy!

Save a Tree, Clean Out Your Files!

Tomorrow, March 28, is RecycleMania's "Clean Out Your Files Day!" Don't forget to bring your old papers, notes, newspapers and any other recyclable materials to a recycling bin on campus! This will help give UGA a final push on the recycling count for RecycleMania. The last day of the competition is April 5 and we want UGA to win the contest! (And, well let's be honest, it will also help you clean up the clutter in your dorm room or apartment.) To learn more about recycling, stop by RecycleMania’s “Clean Out Your Files Day” booth at Memorial Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be live music and lots of fun facts about recycling that I'll bet you didn't know!

Earth Hour 2008

I stopped at the gas station to fill up on my way home this weekend and the label on the nozzle was for Earth Hour and said "Fill up and shut down." The message was to encourage everyone in Atlanta to get gas early on Saturday, March 29 and to also partake in Earth Hour, which is a great movement.

Earth Hour is a new social movement that was actually started by Australia last year. The country wanted to make a political statement to show the world that we can stop global warming and other environmental problems by simply cutting down on the amount of energy we use. The entire country of Australia, that is over 2 million people, took part in this movement last year by turning out all nonessential lights and appliances for one hour. The impact was seen from space, actually is wasn't because all of Australia went dark. But the impact was made.

This year the movement has gone global and over 2o cities around the world have endorsed the idea that everyone should turn off as much electricity as possible on Saturday, March 29 from 8 to 9 p.m. local time. The goal of this effort is to show the entire globe how wasteful we are being and to lower our emissions by five percent. America alone can do that by simply turning off all computers at night, only using one television per house to watch the same show, or just turning off the lights when they are not being used. All of these things will help to lower the emissions the U.S. emits (which is the most of any country in the world) and it will save on the energy bill.

So this Saturday night, we encourage everyone to turn off the lights for one hour and see how much you can do. It will save the planet one day. This Saturday, let's make the power of one be the power of the globe!

Who knew? All this time arguing about which paper can and cannot be recycled, and it's that simple: if it rips, it recycles. Is conserving really that easy? Well yeah, actually it is. A week ago, nearly 150 UGA students gathered for an open discussion of today's hottest topics concerning the environment and sustainable practices. Instead of looking at the big picture, The Power of One forum offered tips directed at college individuals to reduce consumption and reuse materials when possible.

Three panelists expressed the urgency for us all to wake up to the reality of the state of our Earth. Fortunately, the gloom and doom statistics were left out of the conversation as we focused on the positives. The advice, though some of it shocking, was not meant to scare students into being more sustainable, but rather to excite them that they can have such a profound impact! We were reminded that we are fortunate enough to be active participants in UGA's footprint on the environment. UGA can become a national leader in sustainability, but students must lead the way in this transformation. Our small, everyday actions speak volumes.

Jim Hackler, UGA alum and freelance writer on green living, was a featured speaker that evening. He participates in outreach programs promoting effortless, sustainable behaviors that everyone can adopt. An article of his is highlighted in the current issue of Delta Sky magazine. Go Green Alliance

The theme of last week's forum, The Power of One, touched on different ways that individuals can practice sustainable living. Just as all our individual efforts combined can make a difference to the environment so to can our voices in lobbying for important environmental policies and in coordinating activities and awareness campaigns. While there are so many wonderful and passionate groups on campus whose missions support all aspects of the environment and sustainability, there was no unifying front to coordinate projects or activities...until the GO GREEN ALLIANCE was formed.

The GO GREEN ALLIANCE is a council where representatives from all environmental groups at UGA can establish a unifying voice for the environmental cause.

Reduce Consumption (and Embarrassment).

The first step towards sustainability is reducing our consumption. Continuing our Power of One campaign, we are proud to debut our first public service announcement focusing on the impact a single individual can have when it comes to conserving valuable resources.

By turning a computer off or placing it in "sleep mode" instead of using a screensaver, an individual can reduce carbon emissions by more than 80%.

Christina Faust
University of Georgia Student and Ecology Club President
During her sophomore year, Christina organized an entire recycling initiative on her own in a campus residence hall, Soule Hall. She mobilized residents to incorporate recycling into their daily routines, and spawned attention from other residence halls and various campus organizations. Her efforts continue to influence programs and policies at UGA. She was active in the Tate II LEED Certification initiative back as plans were being drawn up for the building, and continues to promote environmental sustainability on campus.

Richard C. Field
Athens-Clarke County Environmental Coordinator
Richard C. (Dick) Field's position was created in 2003 to tackle a lack of consistency and completeness in addressing local environmental issues. Dick came to this position after a 30-year professional career split between forestry research and continuing education with the USDA Forest Service and the University of Georgia. He has a B.S. degree in forestry from the University of Michigan and a Master of Forest Resources and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. He is a registered forester in Georgia and has served on numerous local committees and boards related to planning and natural resources. Dick is a LEED Accredited Professional and served on the Board of the US Green Building Council’s Atlanta Chapter. He initiated the LEED program in Athens-Clarke County, which has two Certified buildings and seven more registered projects. He also serves on ACC’s Energy Conservation and Water Conservation Committees.

Jim Hackler is a nationally recognized expert in communicating the benefits of green living and home construction in an accessible and understandable way. As the former head of two of the country’s leading green building initiatives, U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes and the Southeast’s EarthCraft House program, Jim had a first hand experience on what it means to live and go green to help the environment. Upcoming Event

With Spring Break currently going on, many of us are not thinking about the best ways to save the Earth and what needs to be done to help the environment. Instead most of us are sitting on a beach or somewhere that is not in Athens and having fun with friends having fun and enjoying the warmer weather.

But think about what the world will be like 50 years from now when a new generation is trying to go on Spring Break and enjoy Daytona or Panama City Beach. Will the beach still be there as we see it now? I would like to think so. However, if we do not learn how to help the environment now, those future college students will not have the opportunity to sit on that same beach.

That is why we are having a sustainability forum next week. The Power of One will be townhall forum-type meeting where three people who are very interested and concerned with the environment will be on hand to answer questions and help point people in a direction that can help the environment. This forum is for the benefit of everyone in the Athens and UGA community, so that we can help save the world and how eacho one of us can make an impact each day.

Let's Get Crafty

Have you ever thought of doing something different with your recyclable items? One of the best and most creative ways to recycle is to turn old materials into craft projects. According to Craftzine.com, plastic bags serve as wonderful craft materials. The Web site offers lessons on turning your unwanted grocery bags into plastic yarn and ways in which to fuse the bags together to create reusable totes.

Try to come up with your own ways to turn "trash into treasure." You could cut up old magazines to send fun letters to friends, grow your own herbs in used plastic cups, make wind chimes out of empty soda cans or use newspapers for paper mache projects. The possibilities are endless!

Want to teach your friends about recycling? Here's a challenge: for one year, get a group of friends together and decide on giving recycled crafts as birthday gifts instead of traditional presents. This will keep every one's creative juices flowing while helping the environment and saving some dough.

Remember, as Captain Planet says, "Reduce, REUSE, Recycle!"

"Re-use it or Lose it!"

How would you like to win $5,000 just for having a green, I mean great, idea? Well now is your chance because Planet Smoothie has decided to award one lucky person $5K and free smoothies for a year to come up with the most sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to recycling or eliminating polystyrene ("re-use it or lose it") from the waste stream. It could be an alternative cup material that easily breaks down or a method of re-using polystyrene cups (insulation for arctic gear, perhaps?).

Even though Polystyrene is an excellent recycled material, it is not the easiest and most energy-efficient to recycle when you're done with it. Planet Smoothie currently uses polystyrene for its containers or offers a re-usable container, Mac Daddy Mug, to keep their products cold. However, Planet Smoothie does not like the environmental effects of polystyrene, so they've launched this contest in search of a solution.

All solutions are due by September 30, 2008.

To be considered, submissions must include the following:

1.) Name, affiliation (if applicable), mailing address, email, age (you must be at least 18), contact information

2.) 250-word description of your proposed solution and why you think it's a solution to polystyrene (without disclosing future patent secrets)

3.) A photo of you with your solution.

It's Thirsty Thursday!

Did you know that the Northeast Georgia area is in such a drought emergency that (as of 9/25) we have less than 6 weeks of water in our reservoir? We will be providing tips to conserve water and doing a water bottle swap!

Bring your empty plastic water bottles (Dasani, Aquafina, etc. type bottles) to receive a FREE water bottle made of 70% recycled plastic. We will be at Tate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Ramsey from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. while supplies last!

Also, Athens-Clarke County Recycling has donated recycling bags that we will hand out to students, faculty and staff who pledge to recycle!

It's Trashy Tuesday!

Come out to Tate Plaza from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and bring your paper to recycle. We will be collecting newspapers, old tests, mid-term study supplies that you can't wait to get rid of and more! Anything paper (or cardboard) that you want to get rid of - let's see how big of a pile we can create!

Also, Georgia Power will by handing out CF light bulbs to anyone who signs a pledge promising to conserve energy. CF bulbs are more efficient than regular light bulbs and use less energy to save you money!

Come to Snelling Dining hall from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. where we will clear up all of those recycling myths! We will hand out information on UGA's Dawg Gone It Recycle program!

National Conservation Conversation: Thursday, Oct. 4

In conjunction with the National Conversation on Climate Change, we will be hosting a forum (much like a town hall meeting) to discuss sustainability efforts at the University of Georgia. Please come out and have questions ready for our panel of experts!!

Speakers will include representatives of the university's Energy Conservation Executive Committee and a new Sustainability Committee created in the physical plant division, as well as members of student environmental organizations that have joined together to form the alliance.

The Conservation Conversation will take place on October 4th at 7:00PM in SLC 101.
